What You Need to Know

SQL Database Administrator Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain database replication and log shipping.
  • Install and maintain high availability always on database server clusters.
  • Recommend and implement emerging database technologies, cloud warehouse and data lakes.
  • Develop processes for optimizing database security.
  • Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain database servers and related software to ensure high availability, performance, and security.
  • Monitor database systems to proactively identify and resolve performance issues, capacity constraints, and other operational challenges.
  • Implement and maintain database backup and recovery techniques and procedures to protect against data loss and ensure business continuity.
  • Perform database security audits and implement access controls including user authentication, authorization, data encryption, and other security measures to safeguard sensitive data.
  • Collaborate with developers, system administrators, and other IT staff to design and implement complex database solutions that meet business requirements or organizational goals.
  • Evaluate and recommend database technologies, tools, and methodologies to improve database performance, reliability, and scalability and support implementation efforts.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues in a timely manner, minimizing disruption to business operations following established escalation procedures.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and respond to database-related emergencies outside of regular business hours as needed.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and advancements in database administration and apply them to enhance database capabilities and efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain database documentation, including data dictionaries, schemas, and diagrams, to ensure accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Develop and execute database migration plans to upgrade or transition databases to new platforms such as cloud or new versions, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
  • Participate in database architecture design and planning efforts, including capacity planning, scalability planning, and disaster recovery planning.


Qualifications

If you meet these qualifications, we want to meet you!

  • Bachelors in IT, CS or science or related field required, Master's Degree preferred
  • Min 8-10 years of experience in database administration or a related field, with a strong understanding of database management systems such as SQL Server, MySQL or others.
  • Expert level in MS BI Stack TSQL/SSIS/SSRS and SQL server tools
  • Expert level in log shipping, replication and high availability setup and monitoring.
  • Expert in database server sizing and capacity planning.
  • Expert at PowerShell scripting.
  • Advanced knowledge of database security and performance monitoring standards.
  • Familiarity or knowledge of Snowflake database, MS cloud platform preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex database issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience with database performance tuning, optimization, troubleshooting and implement best practices.
  • Knowledge working with SQL, tables, views, indexes, and stored procedures to resolve issues and fine tune performance issues.
  • Experience and knowledge of database mirroring, replication, clustering, and log shipping.

Certifications and Licensures:
  • Certifications in relevant area such as Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA), or MySQL Database Administrator (CMDBA), Microsoft Certified Database Fundamentals (MTA) preferred
