Position Overview

Reporting directly to the CIO, the Vice President of Software Engineering is responsible for leading an engineering team which develops, releases, and maintains software applications to support Lab Automation and Digital Engineering capabilities needed to drive key business outcomes. This position is responsible for recruiting, developing, and retaining talent, as well as ensuring staff has the skills and capabilities to meet business needs. The VP of Software Engineering also oversees the implementation of software engineering initiatives and is responsible for providing vision, championing best practices, and ensuring initiatives achieve business outcomes.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide vision, leadership, and direction for the software engineering organization to drive adoption of a product centric operating model.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders across business and technology to develop technology strategy and strategic plans.
  • Define best in class technology architecture roadmaps to build scalable and intuitive solutions to integrate with Provider, Patients and Payors.
  • Support and facilitate innovative and experimental software development to test new ideas, within bounded cost and time frames.
  • Champion best practices and modern software development methods and tools.
  • Lead software engineering teams and other stakeholders to set goals for improving code quality, maintainability, security, and scalability and monitor progress against these goals.
  • Implement and manage software development status reporting, metrics, and benchmarks.
  • Collaborate with Infrastructure & Operations as well as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to ensure optimal DevOps and secure code practices are operationalized.
  • Develop workforce strategy to meet the organization's current and future software engineering needs through developing, hiring, and/or sourcing talent.
  • Manage software engineering talent, playing a key role in resource optimization, performance management and compensation processes, role and competency definition, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Manage employee engagement driving a strong inclusive culture and promote a compelling employee value proposition to retain and provide rewarding career paths for the software engineering staff.
  • Oversee management of relationships with consultants, vendors, and contractors and support negotiation of statements of work and business terms with suppliers.
  • Supervise staff; including, but not limited to, organize and prioritize work, write/conduct performance reviews, train/develop, and manage work performance.
  • Communicategoals clearly to employees to ensure understanding and success in achieving them.
  • Motivateandinspireemployees to do their best work through coaching.
  • Maintainmorale and support employee engagement initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in field as outlined in the essential duties; or High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and 4 years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties; or Associate's Degree and 2 years of relevant experience as outlined in the essential duties.
  • 15+ years of experience in Software Engineering management within a rapid-growth environment.
  • 15+ years of experience directly leading technical teams with progressing levels of responsibility.
  • 10+ years of experience in large, cross-functional teams influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders effectively across the organization and within complex contexts.
  • Expertise in budget planning and financial management; preferably with show-back and/or chargeback models.
  • Background in Lab Information Systems, Epic EMR Integration preferred.
  • Strong business acumen in supporting reference lab activities and ability to understand and drive business outcomes.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience leading geographically distributed teams of employee and contract workforce.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong cross-functional partnerships at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a condensed manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills, including an ability to perform under pressure and manage multiple priorities with competing demands for resources.
  • Understanding of latest software development methodologies and best practices.
  • Adaptability and ability to manage rapid change in business needs, processes, or technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Salary Range:

$268,000.00 - $362,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
